No.18924/98.

do

sir,

Pere 25 OCT 981

With reference to your letter of the 29th August 1898, respecting the proposed transfer to the Admiralty of a strip of Colonial land at Hong Kong, required in connec- tion with the Extension of the Naval Yard, I am commanded

by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to acquaint

you, for the information of the Secretary of State for the

Colonies, that the Attorney General at Hong Kong in a

report dated 2nd July 1898, states that the land in

question would be subject to Crown rent, which he believes (as far as actual payment goes) is waived while the land

is actually used by the Imperial Government for Imperial

purposes and is not assigned by that Government.

My Lords desire to know whether the land bears a

Crown Rent in addition to the sum of $5,138 quoted in your

letter, and if so, whether actual payment is waived in

accordance with the Attorney General's belief before

mentioned.

The

Under Secretary of State

for the Colonies,

COLONIAL OFFICE,

Whitehall, S.W.

I am,

Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

Even Macsicson
